Who King Mark is

King Mark holds court at Tintagel, where Tristan arrives without anyone knowing who he is. The young stranger's skill at hunting and playing the harp wins his favor. When Governal reveals that Tristan is his sister's son, Mark knights his nephew and loves him as a son.

What King Mark wants

Mark wants an heir and a loyal court, but jealous barons put pressure on his bond with Tristan. They urge him to marry so that his nephew will not inherit. He refuses until a swallow drops a golden hair, then declares he will marry only the woman it belongs to.

King Mark and the others in the story

Tristan travels to Ireland to win Iseult the Fair as a bride for his uncle. On the voyage to Cornwall, Tristan and Iseult mistakenly drink a love potion intended for her and Mark. Their attachment places Mark's trust beside a love that neither duty nor honor can undo.

Mark is generous and trusting, but suspicion and shame can turn his affection into anger. The story treats him as wounded and human rather than as a tyrant.
