You will love this book if you enjoy small boats, tides and charts, clever amateurs against polished professionals, and friendship that grows under pressure.
本の内容
Would you sail a small, leaky yacht through the Baltic in October, with no crew and a host who will not say why he wants you there? That is the question facing Carruthers, a polished young clerk at the Foreign Office, in The Riddle of the Sands.
Erskine Childers published this novel in 1903. It is presented as a true account, told by Carruthers and edited by a friend, and it was written to wake Britain to the dangers of the German North Sea coast. Childers was a keen sailor himself, and the tides, charts, fog and sandbanks feel completely real.
You get a spy story that opens as a comedy and grows into a chase. Davies, the yacht owner, believes a man named Dollmann tried to drown him among the Frisian sands, and he wants to know why.

A bored clerk answers an odd letter
Carruthers is a young Foreign Office clerk stuck in London in September. He is proud, witty and quietly sorry for himself. His friends are away at country houses, and nobody seems to miss him. He even dresses for dinner alone, to keep his self-respect.
Into this gloom comes a letter posted in Flensburg, in Germany. It is from Arthur Davies, an Oxford acquaintance whom Carruthers once found dull. Davies invites him on a Baltic cruise, with duck shooting if the weather turns cold. The note is cheerful, vague and full of odd orders. He must bring a gun, oilskins, pipe tobacco and a prismatic compass.
Carruthers wonders why anyone needs a surveying compass for a holiday. He grumbles through every errand, feeling like a servant. Still, he cannot think of a better plan, and the telegram he sends says yes. A comfortable man can be woken by a small, strange summons.

『The Riddle of the Sands』についての質問
What is The Riddle of the Sands about?
Two young Englishmen, a clerk and a yachtsman, explore the sandbanks of the German North Sea coast in a small yacht. They suspect a man named Dollmann of hiding a secret and follow clues through storms, fog, and dinner parties.
Who are Carruthers and Davies?
Carruthers is a polished young clerk at the Foreign Office who tells the story. Davies is an Oxford acquaintance and the owner of the yacht Dulcibella, a modest, stubborn sailor with remarkable skill in shallow water.
Is The Riddle of the Sands a true story?
The book is a novel, though it is presented as a true account told by Carruthers and edited by a friend. Erskine Childers published it in 1903, and he drew on his own sailing experience for the places and tides.
Do I need to know about sailing to enjoy it?
No. Carruthers has sailed with crews before but lacks practical skills, so he learns much of the work alongside you. Davies explains tides, channels, and anchoring in simple talk, and the humor of the early chapters keeps the sea language friendly.
What is the main message of the book?
The book argues that careful, practical knowledge of the sea matters, and that a nation should not ignore its coasts. It also shows friendship growing through shared danger, and how loyalty to country can clash with love.
