Parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers who want rhymes to sing and say with small children will find a rich store here. Lovers of folk tradition, riddles and old English life will enjoy it too.
本の内容
Who puts a pig in the air, sends a cow over the moon and lets a dish run off with a spoon? Nobody wrote these lines at a desk. They come from kitchens, nurseries, markets and streets, and they passed from one voice to the next for generations.
The Real Mother Goose gathers hundreds of them in one volume, and Blanche Fisher Wright gave the verses a friendly face with her pictures. Inside you meet lullabies, finger games, riddles, counting rhymes, street cries and cheerful nonsense. You will see what each kind of rhyme does for a child and what small pieces of old life hide inside.

A book of voices with no single author
The Real Mother Goose is a gathering of nursery rhymes, and nobody owns them. They grew out of English folk life over many generations. Nurses, farmers, street sellers and children sang them, changed a word here and there, and handed them on. The name Mother Goose is a friendly mask for all those voices.
The collection follows no strict order. A bedtime song sits beside a riddle, and a kettle rhyme is followed by a tale of a mouse and a clock. Little Bo-Peep opens the book with her missing sheep. A child never grows restless, because each rhyme is over before it can wear out its welcome.
The rhymes also differ in size. Some are only two lines, such as the saying about March winds and April showers. Some fill a page, like the tale of Old Mother Hubbard and her remarkable dog. Others are chains, such as the house that Jack built, which adds a new link with every verse.
The pictures matter because this is a book made for sharing. A parent points at a picture while reading, and the child learns to link a word with a thing. Open anywhere and you are inside a rhyme in a moment.
This is a folk chorus in many forms, made to be sampled in any order.

『マザー・グース童謡集』についての質問
What is The Real Mother Goose about?
It is a collection of traditional nursery rhymes, including lullabies, finger games, riddles, counting rhymes, street cries and tiny tales about figures such as Little Bo-Peep, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill and Old Mother Hubbard.
Who wrote the Mother Goose rhymes?
No single person did. The rhymes come from English folk tradition and were handed down by voice. The name Mother Goose stands for the unknown singers, and Blanche Fisher Wright is the artist behind this illustrated collection.
Who is Little Bo-Peep and what happens to her sheep?
Little Bo-Peep is a shepherdess who loses her sheep, falls asleep and dreams she hears them bleating. When she goes searching with her crook, she finds a surprise about their tails hanging on a tree.
Is The Real Mother Goose easy to read to children?
Yes, in the sense of being made for it. Each rhyme is short, with a steady beat and simple words, so a child can follow along, join in with actions and enjoy the pictures.
What is the point of nursery rhymes like these?
They soothe babies, teach counting, days and letters, build a feel for rhythm and sound, and pass on small pieces of old life. Above all, they give grown-ups and children a playful way to share time.
