You will love this book if you enjoy poetry that sounds like a quiet sermon, if you look for words for love, work, grief and friendship, or if you like to carry one fine thought through a day.

本の内容

What would you ask a wise man who is about to leave but promises to return? In The Prophet, the people of Orphalese get exactly that chance. Almustafa, called the chosen and the beloved, has lived among them for twelve years. Now his ship comes through the mist.

Kahlil Gibran published this book of spoken teachings in New York in 1923. A seeress named Almitra asks the prophet to speak, and then townspeople ask in turn about love, pain, beauty and death. He answers in calm, rhythmic lines full of seeds, rivers and tides. You gain clear pictures for the questions of daily life, and each saying is short enough to carry all day.

重要なポイント 1/8

Love asks for courage and leaves room between two

The book opens on a hill above the city of Orphalese. Almustafa sees his ship coming through the mist. His joy is mixed with sadness, and when he enters the city, crowds beg him to stay.

Almitra, the first to believe in him, asks him to speak. Her first request is love, and his answer is bold. Follow love when it calls, he says, even if the road is steep and its voice shatters your dreams.

He pictures love as a farmer at harvest. It gathers you like sheaves of corn, threshes you, sifts away the husks and grinds you fine. Then it puts you into the sacred fire to become bread. That sounds harsh, yet the aim is that you come to know the secrets of your own heart. Love also cannot own, and cannot be owned.

Then Almitra asks about marriage, and he asks for spaces in togetherness. Partners should fill each other's cups but drink from separate ones, like the strings of a lute that share one music and stand alone. Let love be a moving sea between two shores.

Love is worth its pain, and it lasts best when it leaves room to breathe.

What is The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran about?

A prophet named Almustafa is about to sail home after twelve years in the city of Orphalese. Before he goes, the townspeople ask him about love, marriage, children, work, freedom, pain, beauty, prayer and death, and he answers each in poetic prose.

Who is Almustafa and who is Almitra?

Almustafa is the chosen and beloved prophet who waits for his ship. Almitra is the seeress who first believed in him and who asks him to speak before he leaves. She also asks the first and last questions.

Is The Prophet a novel or a poem?

It is a book of prose poems with a light frame story. The frame is the prophet's departure, and the body is a series of short talks, each answering one question from the people.

When was The Prophet written and where was it published?

It was published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf in New York. Kahlil Gibran wrote it in English and drew its twelve illustrations himself. It follows earlier books such as The Madman and The Forerunner.

Its short talks, plain images and steady rhythm make it easy to read one topic at a time. The main message is that love, work, grief and joy are linked, and that daily life is where the spirit lives.
