You will love this book if you enjoy a witty voice that talks straight to you, stories of love and ambition in old Rio, short chapters full of surprises, and a comedy that cuts into human vanity.
本の内容
What if the narrator of a life story is already dead? Brás Cubas, a rich Brazilian gentleman, dies at two in the afternoon on a Friday in August 1869, and then sits down to write his memoirs from the other side. He begins with his own funeral, where eleven friends stand in the rain, and he tells it with a wink.
The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas was written by Machado de Assis and is set in nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro. It follows one man from a spoiled childhood through a first love, a student's life in Portugal, a long affair with a married woman, and a hunt for office. The chapters are short and many speak straight to you. You get a whole life and a sharp look at how people flatter themselves.

A dead man begins with his death
Brás Cubas opens his memoirs with his own death. He describes himself as a writer who took up the pen only after dying. The grave, he jokes, is simply another cradle.
He dies on a Friday in August 1869, about sixty-four, unmarried and comfortably rich. Eleven friends follow him to the cemetery under a fine, steady rain. One of them claims that nature itself weeps for such a character, and Brás is quietly pleased.
He insists that a grand idea killed him even more than pneumonia did. It was a plaster against melancholy, a cure for the sadness of all humanity. What really drove him was the wish to see the name Brás Cubas plaster printed on newspapers, signs, and little boxes. He took a chill while preparing it and neglected it.
A narrator with nobody left to impress can afford to tell the truth about himself.

『ブラス・クーバスの死後の回想録』についての質問
What is The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas about?
It is the life story of Brás Cubas, a wealthy Rio gentleman who tells it after his death. He recounts a spoiled childhood, a costly first love, a long affair with Virgilia, and a failed hunt for political fame.
Why is Brás Cubas a dead narrator?
Brás says he is a dead man who became an author, and death frees him from fear of public opinion. He can confess his vanity, selfishness, and mistakes with humor, since no audience can judge him.
What is the plaster in the novel?
The Brás Cubas plaster is his invention, an anti-hypochondriac cure meant to relieve human melancholy. He is more eager for the fame of seeing his name on boxes than for profit, and he blames the idea for his death.
Who is Quincas Borba and what is Humanitism?
Quincas Borba is Brás's old schoolmate, whom he later encounters as a beggar. He later invents Humanitism, a philosophy that treats all people as parts of one principle, Humanitas, and explains pain, war, and envy as good.
Is the book easy to follow?
Yes, in the sense that the chapters are short, often only a paragraph, and the narrator speaks straight to you with wit. The chapters move between scenes, jokes, and digressions, often interrupting an episode and returning to it later.
