Who Jessica is
Jessica is the daughter of Shylock, the Jewish moneylender who offers Antonio a loan with a dangerous condition. While her father's dealings help drive the story in Venice, Jessica has her own wish to leave his household. She loves Lorenzo, a young Venetian Christian who is also a friend of Bassanio.
What Jessica wants
Jessica wants to escape her unhappy life at home and find love with Lorenzo. With his help, she disguises herself as a boy and slips away from her father's house. She takes some of Shylock's money and jewels with her, tying her departure to the play's concern with wealth.
For Shylock, her flight brings grief and anger over both his daughter and his possessions. Their broken family bond places Jessica's search for love beside the pain her departure causes.
