Readers who enjoy eyewitness history, French politics, theatre gossip and the private notebooks of a poet-statesman will find rich company here.
本の内容
What happens when a poet keeps a notebook while a kingdom falls? Victor Hugo does exactly that. He stands on a balcony in Paris in February 1848, listening for the alarm bell. Years later he eats rat pie in a city ringed by Prussian guns.
The Memoirs of Victor Hugo gathers pieces from his notebooks and papers, put together after his death in 1885. They run from Rheims in 1825 through eyewitness tales, theatre gossip and the revolution of 1848 to the siege of Paris. You get the feel of an age from a man who stood inside it.

A coronation trip leads Hugo to Shakespeare
Hugo opens with Rheims in 1825, where he travels with the writer Charles Nodier to see Charles X crowned. At that time Shakespeare is a joke in France. Hugo admits he knew him as everyone did, by laughing at him without reading him.
During the ceremony a deputy slips Nodier a battered Glasgow edition of Shakespeare, bought for six sous. It is King John, and the tapestry facing them shows that very king. That night Nodier translates aloud while Hugo reads a Spanish book of old ballads. Each argues for his own book, and each ends by admiring the other's.
The coronation itself gets little space. Hugo prefers a swallow's nest he spots from a tower, built in the stone crown of an old king's statue. In 1838 he returns to the empty cathedral and finds it nobler without its finery.
Grandeur is easy to miss when you look only at crowns and ceremonies.
