You will enjoy this book if you like fable mixed with a vivid picture of a city, witty talk about money and love, and if you have wondered what your wishes really cost.

本の内容

Paris, October 1829. A young man in a worn hat climbs the stairs of a gambling den at the Palais-Royal with one gold coin in his hand. He throws it on the table, loses it in a second, and walks out toward the Seine to drown himself. What would you do if a stranger then offered you any wish you liked, but told you that each wish would cost you days of your life?

The Magic Skin is a novel by Honoré de Balzac, first published in 1831 and part of his great series The Human Comedy. It joins sharp pictures of Paris, with its bankers, doctors and courtesans, to a fable about a piece of leather that grants every desire and shrinks each time. The young man is Raphael de Valentin, and his story asks how much of a life can be spent on wanting.

A ruined young man loses his last coin

The novel opens at number 36 in the Palais-Royal, where a young man hands over his hat and walks into a gambling salon. The old players and the croupier feel a chill when he enters, because his face holds failure and a faded grace. Even these hardened gamblers pity him.

He throws down one gold coin. It lands on black. A young Italian bets his whole pile against it, red wins, and the croupier's rake sweeps the coin away. The young man's lips go pale, and he leaves without a plea for pity.

Outside, he drifts toward the Pont Royal, hearing only the voice of death. He pictures his body in a rescue shed and a paragraph in the newspaper, and decides to wait for darkness. He gives his last pennies to a beggar and watches a rich young woman who gives him one careless glance. At last he enters an antiques shop to pass the hours.

Despair in this novel happens in the middle of a busy crowd that does not notice.

What is The Magic Skin about?

It tells of Raphael de Valentin, a ruined young man in Paris who receives a piece of leather that grants every wish but shrinks with each one, shortening his life. The story follows how he spends his wishes.

Who is Raphael de Valentin?

Raphael is the hero, a talented young writer from an old family, ruined by his father's lawsuits. He lives in an attic, loves the cold countess Foedora, and becomes rich through the skin.

What does the Magic Skin symbolize?

The skin stands for a human life and for desire itself. Each wish makes it smaller, so it shows how wanting and getting use up our time and strength, and how little of both we truly have.

When was The Magic Skin written, and is it a true story?

Balzac published it in 1831. The talisman and the wishes are invented, but the Paris of newspapers, gambling dens, bankers and doctors is drawn from the real city and society of that time.

The plot is clear and driven by a single striking object, and most scenes are vivid and funny. The story moves from a gambling den to a banquet to an attic, and each scene is easy to picture.
