This book suits readers who love big questions about happiness, religion, art and society, enjoy a thinker with a strong voice and sharp wit, and like to see a whole civilization weighed in one sweep.
本の内容
What would humanity call progress if every human head could tell the story of its past in one great autobiography? That question opens The Life of Reason, and the whole book is one try at answering it. George Santayana, a Spanish-born philosopher who taught in America, wrote it as linked works on common sense, society, religion, art and science.
His answer is simple. Reason is not a cold power above life. It is life itself when it learns what it wants and finds the means to get it. The listener gets one test for any human activity: does it harmonize our desires with each other and with the world?

Reason is life that knows its aim
Santayana begins by saying that progress means nothing without memory and reflection. A creature that only feels pleasure and pain, with no thought of before or after, cannot improve in any way it could notice. Improvement needs an ideal, and an ideal needs a mind that looks backward and forward.
So he defines reason as impulse changed by reflection. When something absent, such as a past mistake or a future goal, begins to shape what a person does now, reason has begun. Two lives usually lived apart must join: a life of impulse, found in work and passion, and a life of reflection, found in religion, science and art. The rational animal is born from the union of two monsters, the brute and the maniac.
Rationality is a craft and not a gift. Reason is life made conscious of what it loves and how to reach it.

『理性の生――人類の進歩の諸相』についての質問
What is The Life of Reason about?
It is about how human thought and action can become harmonious and fruitful. Santayana traces reason through common sense, society, religion, art and science, judging each by whether it serves human happiness and fits the natural world.
What does Santayana mean by the Life of Reason?
He means every practical idea and every action whose effects on consciousness justify it. It is life guided by ideals, in which impulse and reflection work together, so that ideas become useful and actions become happy.
What is the main message of The Life of Reason?
Ideals are rooted in human nature, and progress means bringing our desires into harmony with each other and with the world. Myths, arts and institutions are valuable as expressions of that harmony.
How is The Life of Reason arranged?
It has five parts: Reason in Common Sense, Reason in Society, Reason in Religion, Reason in Art and Reason in Science. Each part can be read on its own, and the ideas build toward one view.
What does Santayana say about religion in this book?
He treats religion as moral poetry. Myths express real human ideals through symbols, so he values them for their meaning and function, while arguing that they should not be read as literal accounts of nature.
