Who Katrina Van Tassel is
Katrina Van Tassel is the only daughter of Baltus Van Tassel, a prosperous Dutch farmer in Sleepy Hollow. She is eighteen, rosy cheeked, and flirtatious, with charms that draw the attention of two very different suitors.
She also takes singing lessons from Ichabod Crane, the schoolmaster who hopes to marry her. Her place in the story brings courtship together with questions about wealth, appetite, and ambition.
Katrina Van Tassel and the others in the story
Ichabod admires Katrina, but the abundance of her father's farm strongly shapes his interest in her. He imagines its animals as meals and pictures selling the land to buy property in the west.
Brom Bones wants Katrina for himself and uses practical jokes to make his rival look foolish. Katrina watches their rivalry without giving a clear sign, and Irving does not tell us how she feels.
