対象読者

You will love this poem if you enjoy philosophy in verse, desert imagery, Persian poetry, comparative religion, or a thoughtful skeptic who still believes in kindness.

本の内容

A caravan breaks camp before sunrise. One watcher stays behind and listens as the camel bells fade into the desert.

This is how The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî begins. Sir Richard Francis Burton published it in 1880 as the work of a Persian pilgrim, with notes that quote thinkers from Confucius to Schopenhauer. A kasîdah is a long poem in rhymed couplets, and this one has nine sections. You meet a wanderer who tests every faith and still believes in truth, self-cultivation and pity.

A Persian pilgrim speaks through Burton

The Kasîdah arrives wrapped in a small story. Burton says he knew a Persian named Hâjî Abdû for many years. Abdû liked to call himself El-Hichmakâni, a joking surname that means of no hall, nowhere. He belongs to no country, no school and no party.

No one guessed he was a poet. At last he handed over a messy manuscript, and Burton took it away.

Readers have long taken the poem as Burton's own thought in a Persian mask. The note to the reader lists five principles. Happiness and misery are shared out equally. The purpose of life is self-cultivation with regard for others. Affection, sympathy and pity are the highest pleasures. Judgment should be suspended, with a healthy suspicion of facts. And although the poet may seem destructive, he means to build.

He wants a view that shows every faith partly right and partly wrong. He is tired of petty tribes who each claim a monopoly on truth. He laments life's shortness, but he does not give up on it.

The poem is a skeptic's sermon, offered by a pilgrim who still believes in truth, pity and self-making.

『ハージー・アブドゥー・エル=ヤズディーのカスィーダ』についての質問

What is The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî about?

It is a philosophical poem in nine sections. A pilgrim looks at life, death, gods, good and evil, truth and the soul, then proposes a way to live by seeking knowledge, building character and showing pity.

Who was Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî?

He is the Persian pilgrim of Yezd who is presented as the poem's author. Burton says he met him in India and carried off his manuscript. Readers generally take the poem as Burton's own thought in an Eastern guise.

What does the camel bell mean in the poem?

The tinkling of the camel bell is the poem's refrain. It stands for passing time, for friends and ages that fade out of life, and joins the faint whisper of the desert at the poem's close.

What is the main message of The Kasîdah?

Nobody holds the whole truth, so be modest about your beliefs. Joy and sorrow are shared evenly. The best life seeks knowledge, tries to cultivate the self, and treats others with sympathy and pity.
