本の内容
What if almost nothing that upsets you is truly yours to fix? That is the bet behind the Enchiridion, a handbook of fifty-one short chapters by the Stoic teacher Epictetus. Its name means something close to a thing kept in the hand, and it can also mean a small dagger carried for defence. Both senses fit, because the book is a pocket guide for the mind that cuts through fear and fuss.
Epictetus began life as a slave, was later freed, and opened a school in Nicopolis in Greece. He wrote nothing himself. His pupil Arrian took notes of his talks and shaped them into this short manual. You get rules for the moment your temper rises or your plans fall apart, and the first idea is the foundation for the rest.

重要なポイント 1/7
Sort everything into yours and not yours
The whole manual rests on its first chapter. Epictetus splits the world in two. Opinion, intention, desire and aversion lie within our power because they are our own doing. The body, property, reputation and public office do not.
What is ours is free and unhindered. What is not ours is weak, dependent and belongs to other people. If you treat dependent things as your own, he warns, you will be blocked, you will grieve, and you will blame gods and people. If you claim only what is yours, no one can compel you. You blame no one, you have no enemy, and you suffer no harm. He admits this means giving up some goals entirely, because you cannot chase wealth and power while guarding your inner freedom.
He turns the idea into a habit at once. When an unpleasant impression comes, tell it that it is only an impression. Then ask whether it concerns what is in your control or what is not. If it is not, the answer is ready: that is nothing to me.
Chapter four adds a small scene. Before you bathe, picture the splashing, the shoving and the stealing at the baths. Tell yourself you mean to bathe and also to keep your will in harmony with nature. Then a spoiled bath cannot spoil you.
Put your effort into your own choices and let go of the rest.

『エンケイリディオン』についての質問
What is the Enchiridion about?
It is a short manual of Stoic advice. It teaches you to separate what is in your control, such as your choices and opinions, from what is not, such as other people's actions, and to find calm by focusing on the first.
Who wrote the Enchiridion and when?
Epictetus, a Stoic teacher of the Roman world who died in 135, gave the teaching. His pupil Arrian wrote down and arranged his sayings into this handbook, so the words come from his lessons.
What does Enchiridion mean?
The word comes from Greek and points to something held in the hand, so it can mean a handbook or dagger. Here it means a pocket guide, a manual meant to be kept close and used.
Is the Enchiridion easy to read?
Its fifty-one chapters are brief, and many are only a sentence or two. Plain images such as a cup, a ship, a banquet and a pair of handles make each lesson easy to remember and to try at once.
What is the main message of the Enchiridion?
You cannot control events, but you can control your judgments, desires and actions. Peace and freedom come from choosing carefully in that small area, and from accepting everything else as part of the role you are given.
