対象読者

You will love this book if you enjoy letters, family stories, old manners, and the way a community once taught its young. Readers of Philippine history and daily life will find a close view of Tagalog homes.

本の内容

Picture a girl of twelve under a blooming pomelo tree in Paombong at six in the evening. Ducks and herons fly home in formation. Feliza is writing to her older sister Urbana, who is away at school in Manila, and she asks for one thing: tell me what your teacher is teaching you.

That request starts The Correspondence Between Two Maidens, Urbana and Feliza, written by Modesto de Castro for Tagalog families. Mothers could use it to teach children how to live with God and with people. You get the manners, the advice, and the family story behind them.

A garden at dusk opens the letters

The book opens with a preface in which Modesto de Castro speaks to young men and to mothers. He compares children to tender shoots and mothers to gardeners who must tend them. Good conduct taught only in the classroom is like a borrowed outfit, soon discarded.

He names what each sibling will offer. Urbana shows how to treat others well. Feliza shows how a young woman avoids dangers to her purity. Their little brother Honesto shows a child's duty to God.

Then comes the first letter, from Feliza. She smells the lilac, oleander and sampaguita Urbana tended. She sees the birds fly home like an army following one leader. In her mind she runs with Urbana through the garden, picking flowers and bursting into laughter. She remembers her sister making the sign of the cross each morning and putting God first on her lips.

Urbana answers with a gentle scolding. Feliza forgot to say whether their parents were well, and she praised Urbana instead of thanking those who made her. Affection and correction travel together in every letter.

A good life in this book starts at home, with obedience, work and gratitude.

『ウルバナとフェリサ、二人の乙女の往復書簡』についての質問

What is The Correspondence Between Two Maidens, Urbana and Feliza about?

It is a book of letters between two sisters, Urbana in Manila and Feliza in Paombong. Through them it teaches faith, manners, friendship, courtship, marriage and parenting, and it follows Feliza as she grows from a girl into a wife.

Who was Modesto de Castro?

Modesto de Castro was a nineteenth century Filipino writer who worked in the town of Paombong, which he names in his preface. He died in 1864. He wrote this book to help mothers and young people learn good conduct.

Is Urbana and Feliza a true story?

The two sisters and their family are fictional, a device the author uses to teach. The customs, school life, prayers and household details reflect Tagalog life in the nineteenth century, and the letters are written in a warm, direct family voice.

Who is Honesto in the book?

Honesto is the youngest brother of Urbana and Feliza. His name means honest, and he is the child for whom many of the rules are written, from prayer and school manners to writing, friendship and table etiquette.

What is the main message of the book?

Good conduct grows from love of God and love of neighbor. The letters teach that manners, honor, work, faithful friendship, and careful choices in marriage are ways of caring for others and of keeping a good name.
