対象読者

You will love this book if you are drawn to poems of grief and faith, the sea and the night sky, and big questions about death, God, pity and hope.

本の内容

Imagine a father who wakes each morning listening for his daughter's hand on a door key, and who knows she will not come in. Victor Hugo gathered such poems into The Contemplations, published in 1856, mixing earlier work with mourning for his daughter and verse written in island exile.

This volume holds Books Four, Five and Six. Pauca Meae is a small cycle of memory and mourning. Onward follows the poet into exile and into argument with those who call him a traitor. At the Edge of Infinity stares into the abyss and asks who is listening in the dark.

You hear Hugo accuse God, then kneel, then doubt, then climb toward a hope so wide that it takes in tyrants and stones.

重要なポイント 1/10

Book Four begins with innocence and a wedding

Pauca Meae opens not with grief but with a hymn to innocence and virtue. Hugo pictures them as two peaks, east and west, that guide a sinking ship. One holds a cradle in its shadow and the other a tomb.

The hymn ends on a single bleeding footprint in white snow, and the poet names it as love. Love in these poems is never safe. It leaves a mark, and the mark is red.

Then comes a short poem dated February 15, 1843, spoken in a church. A father tells his daughter to love the man who loves her and to enter her new home with a smile. The tone is tender and a little shaken, as a father's must be at a wedding. The same poet who gives her away will later stand over her grave, so the happiest page sits beside the saddest.

Hugo begins with joy so that the coming loss can be measured.

『静観詩集 第2巻――今日』についての質問

What is Pauca Meae about?

Pauca Meae is Book Four, Latin for a few poems for my own. It collects Hugo's poems about his daughter Léopoldine, from her wedding in 1843 through his grief, memories, anger at God and slow acceptance.

Who is Charles Vacquerie in The Contemplations?

Charles Vacquerie was the young husband of Hugo's daughter. In the poem named for him, Hugo honors the man who chose to die beside her in the river and blesses him as a hero of love.

Why was Victor Hugo in exile when he wrote these poems?

Hugo opposed Napoleon III and left France after his coup. He lived on Jersey and later Guernsey, and many poems here are written from those islands, looking over the sea toward home.

What is the main message of the second volume?

The poems suggest that grief, doubt and exile can lead to a wider faith. Hugo asks readers to pray, to pity even the guilty, and to believe that suffering and darkness lead toward light.

Is Book Six of The Contemplations worth reading?

Book Six gathers Hugo's boldest poems, from the short image of Prayer as a bridge to the vast vision of all creation rising toward God. It offers striking images of death, stars, doubt and hope.
