Who the Knight is

The Knight joins the company travelling to Canterbury and stands first among the pilgrims described before the storytelling begins. He comes straight from his travels, still wearing a coat marked by his armour. His modest manner sits beside his experience as a soldier who has fought in many lands.

The Knight and the others in the story

His son, the Squire, is a young man in love who sings, writes songs and dresses brightly. Their Yeoman is a forester who wears green clothing and carries a bow.

When the pilgrims draw lots to choose their first storyteller, the lot falls to the Knight. His romance follows Palamon and Arcite, two imprisoned cousins whose shared love for Emelye turns friendship into rivalry. The tale explores order, fortune and the limits of human plans, reflecting the Knight's respect for duty. The Miller interrupts the planned order afterward, insisting on a comic tale that answers the Knight's noble romance.
