Who Spitz is
Spitz runs at the front of the sled team that Buck joins in the frozen north. He is a white, powerful husky who leads the other dogs and wants his authority recognized.
The team works for Perrault and François, two French-Canadian mail couriers who teach Buck to pull a sled. Spitz belongs to a world where dogs fight without warning and survival demands constant watchfulness.
What Spitz wants
Spitz wants to keep his place as leader, and Buck's growing strength threatens that position. Their quarrels concern food and place as well as who will lead the team. As Buck learns the ways of the trail, the rivalry between the two dogs grows bitter.
Spitz and the others in the story
Buck arrives from a comfortable California home, while Spitz already holds authority on the sled team. Perrault and François sense the conflict growing between the dogs but cannot stop it. Their tension gives Buck another challenge alongside learning to work, find food and endure the cold.
