本の内容
What would you do if a stack of old papers began to join together into a picture you could not bear to see? That is the trouble of the man who tells The Call of Cthulhu. He opens a dead relative's locked box and finds a small clay carving of a creature with a tentacled head, a scaly body and small wings.
H. P. Lovecraft wrote the story in the 1920s, and it first appeared in Weird Tales in 1928. It is built from a professor's notes, a police inspector's account, a newspaper clipping and a sailor's diary. No single fact seems frightening until they meet.

A dead professor's box starts a search
The story opens with a warning. The narrator says the kindest thing about the human mind is that it cannot connect everything it holds. People live on a calm island of ignorance, surrounded by black seas. He fears the day when scattered facts are joined, because the picture could drive people mad.
He then explains how he joined a few of them. In the winter of 1926 and 1927 his granduncle, George Gammell Angell, dies at ninety-two. Angell was a retired professor of Semitic languages at Brown University. He fell on a steep street near the waterfront after a sailor jostled him, and doctors blamed his heart.
The narrator carries the professor's files to his rooms in Boston. Among them is a locked box. Inside he finds a clay carving that rises from a flat surface, along with notes and press clippings. The carving is plainly modern, yet its rows of marks look like prehistoric writing. Above them is a figure that mixes an octopus, a dragon and a human shape.
The main papers carry the heading Cthulhu Cult. They split into two parts, one about a young dreamer named Wilcox and one about a police inspector named Legrasse. The narrator doubts it all at first. He decides to find the sculptor who seems to have disturbed his uncle's peace.
A small clay carving is enough to start a search that will not let go.
