本の内容
What if the story of one weapon could take you from a monkey pelting travellers with branches to the legions of Rome? Picture a curved wooden blade in a Cairo museum case. It carries the royal name of a pharaoh who lived more than three thousand years ago.
The Book of the Sword appeared in 1884. Its author, Richard Francis Burton, was an explorer, a linguist and a certified fencing master. He follows the blade from prehistory to the early Roman Empire, through stone, bone, wood, copper, bronze, iron and steel, and through Egypt, Assyria, India, Greece and Rome.

重要なポイント 1/10
The sword stands for the whole human story
Burton opens with a bold claim that the history of the sword is the history of humanity. He calls it the oldest, the most widespread and the most varied of weapons. For him the blade is a record of what people have prized, feared and hoped for.
Swords were worshipped, stored in temples and given names such as Joyeuse and Zu'l-Fikar. To surrender a sword meant submission, and to break one meant disgrace. Kissing a sword was among the highest oaths a person could take.
Burton argues that war and conquest carried arts and sciences across the world. He admits that vile hands turned the sword into a murderer, but he thinks its benefits outweigh its harm. The sword, for Burton, is a lens on the whole human past.
