You will enjoy this if you like literary detective work, bold theories argued with humour, the Odyssey itself, Sicilian landscapes, or watching a clever writer follow one hunch.
本の内容
Who gives a ship a rudder at both ends? Not a sailor, says Samuel Butler, but a young woman writing about boats she barely knew. That is the daring claim of The Authoress of the Odyssey, which Butler published in 1897.
He was a Victorian novelist and a reader of Greek. He argues that one woman wrote the Odyssey, living in Trapani, a port on the west coast of Sicily. You get his shortened retelling, then proofs from the poem's women, its mistakes, its maps, its dates and a small ancient coin.

A woman's hand explains the poem's riddle
Butler begins with a feeling that something is wrong. He reads the Odyssey in Greek while writing the words for an oratorio, and the words seem clear but the meaning seems to hide. He wants to see the writer behind the poem.
At first he guesses a blind bard among the servants. That would explain why the men say and do odd things. It does not explain why every woman is drawn exactly right.
The answer comes at Circe. Butler sees a young woman who knows as little about what men can do as she knows about milking ewes in the cave of Polyphemus. Then come the slips. A ship gets a rudder at both ends, and a hawk tears its prey in flight. He thinks such slips add to the charm. The first clue is a reader who notices that the men are wrong and the women are right.

『オデュッセイアの女流作者』についての質問
What is The Authoress of the Odyssey about?
It is Samuel Butler's argument that the Odyssey was written by one young woman living in Trapani, Sicily, not by the author of the Iliad. He supports it with the poem's women, its mistakes, its landscape and its dates.
Did a woman really write the Odyssey?
Most scholars do not accept Butler's theory. The book is best read as a lively thought experiment. It shows how a poem can be read for its voice, its places and its small details.
Why does Butler think the Odyssey is set in Trapani?
He matches Scheria and Ithaca to Trapani's two harbours, its rock called Malconsiglio, its caves, its spring and Mount Eryx. He argues that so many matches together are unlikely to be chance.
Who is Nausicaa in Butler's theory?
Nausicaa is the Phaeacian princess who meets Ulysses while washing clothes. Butler suggests the writer drew herself as Nausicaa, because Book Six is written with such freshness and warmth.
Do you need to know the Odyssey to read it?
No. Butler includes his own shortened retelling of the whole story, with the passages that matter to his case. The chapters are clear, witty and written for the general reader.
