Who Christopher Newman is
Christopher Newman comes from the American West, where he makes a fortune before leaving commerce for Europe. He is generous, direct and confident, treating a servant and a marquis with the same courtesy. His openness helps him make friends, but it also leaves him unprepared for people who place family pride above fairness.
What Christopher Newman wants
Newman believes he has worked enough and now deserves to enjoy what the world offers. He seeks fine art and travel, but marriage becomes the central hope of his new life. When he meets Claire de Cintré, his wish for a wife becomes a steady, sincere attachment to her.
Christopher Newman and the others in the story
