This book suits readers who love tales of loyalty, vengeance and honor, folklore with ghosts and clever animals, and travel writing that shows a real society from the inside.
本の内容
Picture a winter night in Edo, with snow falling on a silent street. Forty-seven masterless warriors stand outside a sleeping house, while their leader has played the drunkard so that nobody will guess their plan. Why would men give up their names, their families and their futures for a dead lord?
Algernon Freeman-Mitford was a young British diplomat in Japan in the 1860s, as the old feudal order was fading. He published this book in London in 1871. He translated tales and sermons, recorded an execution he witnessed, and added short notes on customs. You get a vendetta, robbers, outcasts, peasants, ghosts and fairy tales, all meant to keep a vanishing world alive.

Mitford sets out to preserve a vanishing Japan
Mitford starts by explaining why the book exists. For centuries Japan had been closed to outsiders, and officials blocked foreigners from studying its language, books and history. By 1871 the old order was dissolving, and he feared it would vanish unrecorded. So he translates the stories the Japanese told about themselves.
He adds only short notes where a reader needs help with a rank, a custom or a name. Lords and retainers, warriors and priests, humble craftsmen and the outcast Eta will each take a turn as the leading figure. Together they should give a fairly complete picture of Japanese society.
He also sets the scene with care. He asks you to imagine Edo Bay, with its pine slopes, temple roofs and Mount Fuji standing far off. Then he leads you to Sengakuji temple, where small tombstones stand in a garden. There are forty-eight stones, and the reason comes late in the tale.
The book is a portrait of a whole world, told as far as possible by the people who lived in it.
