Readers who enjoy comic Petersburg farce, sharp character studies and sudden moments of tenderness will find a home here. It suits anyone drawn to Russian writing and short tales.

本の内容

Would you hide under a stranger's bed, or walk into a wedding you were never asked to? The people in this collection do exactly that, and they pay for it in embarrassment, in laughter, and sometimes in something deeper.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky wrote these nine tales across many years, from comic farce to a dream of paradise. You meet Petersburg clerks, generals and drifters, seen with comic sharpness and with pity. Begin with the humblest, a tale of an old soldier, a drunken guest and a pair of missing breeches.

重要なポイント 1/10

A tailor takes pity on a drunken drifter

In An Honest Thief, the narrator takes in Astafy Ivanovitch, an old soldier who sews for a living. When a thief steals the narrator's overcoat, Astafy cannot stop retelling the scene. That leads him to a story about the one honest thief he ever met.

In a tavern Astafy meets Emelyan Ilyitch, a quiet drunk with a coat full of holes. Emelyan attaches himself to Astafy like a dog, and Astafy, who can barely feed himself, cannot send him away. He decides to be a guardian to the man and to wean him off drink. When Astafy jokes that Emelyan should learn to sew, the poor man tries to thread a needle with shaking hands and bursts into tears.

Then a pair of fine riding breeches goes missing from Astafy's chest. Astafy suspects, Emelyan denies it, and the quarrel wounds both men. The tale asks which weighs more, the wrong itself or the mistrust that follows it.

Pity for a failing person can be tangled up with anger, and honesty can live inside a thief.

『短編小説集』についての質問

What is Dostoyevsky's Short Stories about?

It gathers nine tales about Petersburg clerks, generals and outcasts. They deal with pride, shame, jealousy and pity, and move from farce to dream, from An Honest Thief to The Dream of a Ridiculous Man.

Which stories are in this collection?

The collection includes An Honest Thief, A Novel in Nine Letters, An Unpleasant Predicament, Another Man's Wife, The Heavenly Christmas Tree, The Peasant Marey, The Crocodile, Bobok and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man.

Are the stories funny or serious?

Both. Several are comic farces with quick dialogue and absurd scenes, such as the clerk in the crocodile. Others, like the Christmas tale and the Marey memory, are tender and sober. Many mix laughter with sympathy.

What does Bobok mean in the story?

Bobok is a nonsense word muttered by a decayed corpse that still has a spark of awareness. A philosopher among the dead suggests that remnants of life persist in consciousness for several months.

Is it easy to start reading Dostoyevsky with these tales?

Yes, these are a friendly way in. Each tale is short and has a clear scene, a lively voice and a memorable situation, so you can read one at a sitting and meet the author's main themes.
