It carries them from English college rooms to the African coast, through fever swamps and cannibals, and into the burial caves of Kôr. The story opens in Cambridge. Holly is twenty-two, short and broad, with a heavy brow, and he thinks of himself as branded with ugliness. He has one friend in the world, a rich, handsome and very sick man named Vincey.
At midnight Vincey arrives, coughing blood and carrying a massive iron chest. He asks Holly to raise his son Leo, and to open the chest on the boy's twenty-fifth birthday. He tells of an ancestor, Kallikrates, a priest of Isis killed by a white queen in Africa. Holly decides his friend is drunk or mad.
Still, he swears the oath. Vincey says there is no death, only change, and leaves with the word Remember. By morning he is dead, and the lawyers confirm every detail of the will.
A promise to a dying friend starts a doubter on the road to wonders.
