You will enjoy this book if you like warm, funny stories about clever young heroes, if old New York fascinates you, or if you love tales of honest effort and the friends who lift a person up.
本の内容
Where does a boy sleep when nobody wants him? In a wooden box half full of straw, on Spruce Street in New York. That is where Ragged Dick wakes up on the first page, rough, joking, and broke before breakfast. He is fourteen and shines boots for ten cents a pair.
Ragged Dick, or Street Life in New York with the Boot-Blacks was written by Horatio Alger Jr. and first appeared in 1867 and 1868. Alger wanted to win sympathy for homeless children in the city. You get a walking tour of Broadway, Wall Street, and Mott Street, a hero with a quick tongue, and one plain question. Can a boy with nobody behind him climb out?

A street boy with one rule he keeps
The story opens with a porter calling Dick awake at seven. The porter asks where a bootblack finds money for the theater. Dick answers that he earns it, and that he would never steal, because stealing is mean.
Alger does not hide Dick's faults. The boy swears now and then. He wastes money on cigars, shows, oyster stews for his friends, and card games. The author states that he does not call Dick a model boy.
Still, Dick has an open face and a joke for every customer. Mr. Greyson looks at his torn coat, and Dick says it once belonged to General Washington. Mr. Greyson hands him a quarter and asks him to bring back the change. The gentleman walks off doubting that Dick will return the fifteen cents. The reader knows better.
A single firm rule of honesty can be the ground a whole life is built on.

『ラグド・ディック――ニューヨークの靴磨き少年たちの街暮らし』についての質問
What is Ragged Dick about?
It follows Dick, a fourteen-year-old New York bootblack who sleeps in boxes and spends his money freely. After meeting a kind boy named Frank, he saves, studies, and works to grow up respectable.
Is Ragged Dick a true story?
No, Dick is invented, but Alger says several characters are drawn from life. He based them on talks with street boys and on facts from the Newsboys' Lodging House. It first appeared in 1867 as a magazine serial.
What does rags to riches mean in this book?
It means rising from poverty through honesty, effort, and education. Dick's rise is small and steady, built on a room, a savings account, and evening lessons, with help from kind people along the way.
Who are Frank Whitney and Henry Fosdick?
Frank is a country boy who gives Dick clothes and the hope of a better life. Fosdick is a shy bootblack who becomes Dick's roommate and tutor, teaching him to read and write.
Is Ragged Dick easy to read?
Yes, it reads easily. The chapters are short, the plot moves from scene to scene, and the dialogue is lively and funny, with Dick's jokes carrying much of the story.
