You will love this book if you enjoy quiet reading, collect old words for morning and evening, or want short, rich texts that open into reflection.

本の内容

What did a monk say to God at midnight in the year 600? What did a king pray before a battle, or a scholar before a lesson? This book answers by letting them speak. It gathers prayers from ten centuries of the medieval Church and sets them in order of time.

J. Manning Potts edited the collection. The prayers come from bishops, abbots, kings, mystics and voices whose names are lost. Gregory the Great opens the book and a sonnet by Michelangelo closes it. You hear how short collects work, how litanies carry a crowd, and how the voice grows more personal.

重要なポイント 1/8

Early collects give one name and one request

The book opens in the sixth century with short prayers that follow a steady pattern. Many are collects, brief prayers that gather the needs of a people into a few lines. The first voice is Gregory the Great. Most of the others come from the Gregorian Sacramentary, a service book linked to his name.

Look at how a collect is built. It names God by one trait, such as the one whose nature is always to show mercy. Then it makes a single request, here that the chains of sin be loosed by great compassion. Then it closes in the name of Jesus Christ. Three steps carry the whole prayer.

Notice the voice. Almost every prayer says we. The person praying stands inside a crowd. Faith here is shared before it is private. You can use the method at once. Choose one quality of God, ask for one thing, and stop.

The takeaway: a strong prayer can be one clear name, one plain request and a quiet close.

What is Prayers of the Middle Ages about?

It gathers prayers from the sixth to the fifteenth century, arranged by period. They ask for forgiveness, light, peace, love and guidance, and come from popes, monks, kings, scholars and old service books.

Who wrote the prayers in this book?

Many people did. Named voices include Gregory the Great, Columba, Bede, Alcuin, Alfred the Great, Anselm, Bernard of Clairvaux, Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas and Thomas à Kempis. Some prayers come from anonymous service books.

What is a collect, and what is a litany?

A collect is a short prayer that names God, makes one request and closes in the name of Christ. A litany is a series of petitions, each answered by the people with the same short reply.

Is Prayers of the Middle Ages easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that most prayers are brief, plainly worded and complete in themselves. You can read one in a minute, return to it at any time, or follow the century-by-century order from start to finish.

Many readers know the peace prayer credited to Francis of Assisi, which begins Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace. It sets love beside hate, hope beside despair and light beside darkness.
