Who the Artful Dodger is
The Artful Dodger is quick, cheeky and proud of his skill at picking pockets. Oliver meets him in Barnet, worn out and hungry after his journey toward London. The Dodger is about Oliver's age, but dresses like a small man and speaks with confidence.
The Artful Dodger and the others in the story
The Dodger offers Oliver a meal and a bed, then leads him to Fagin's house in Saffron Hill. Oliver accepts what seems like kindness without understanding the danger of his new company.
Fagin trains boys to steal, disguising the practice as a game with a handkerchief. When Oliver goes out with the Dodger and Charley Bates, he sees them steal a gentleman's handkerchief. Their theft reveals what the game means, while Oliver's frightened flight makes the crowd suspect him.
