Hades

Hades is the Greek god who rules the dead, and his name also means the underworld itself. Brother of Zeus and Poseidon, he governs a realm that most people cannot leave. His stories often concern grief, separation, and the limits of human power.

Key stories of Hades

Hades and Persephone

Hades carries Persephone into the underworld to become his wife. In the most common version, eating pomegranate seeds there means she must return for part of each year.

In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Demeter stops crops from growing while her daughter is missing. Hades gives Persephone pomegranate seed before she leaves, binding her to return.

Orpheus asks for Eurydice

Orpheus enters the underworld to ask for his dead wife back. Hades and Persephone agree, but impose a condition that Orpheus fails to keep.

In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Orpheus moves the rulers of the dead with his song. Eurydice follows him towards the living world, but he looks back before their journey is complete and loses her again.

How to recognise Hades in stories

  1. Look for a stern ruler beneath the earth, sometimes called Pluto.
  2. Notice Cerberus, the watchdog guarding the world of the dead.
  3. Watch for bargains about whether a dead person may return.

Is Hades the same as the devil?

No, Hades is not the Greek equivalent of the devil. He rules the dead rather than leading a rebellion against goodness. He can be harsh and frightening, but his usual role is to maintain the boundary between the living and the dead.

Is Hades a god or a place?

Hades can mean either the god or the realm he rules. Context usually makes the meaning clear: someone who speaks or commands is the god, while a destination beneath the earth is his kingdom. The realm is not simply a place of punishment.
