Genesis
Genesis is the first book of the Jewish Torah and the Christian Bible. It tells of creation, early human wrongdoing, and the families of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Its stories give classic literature many familiar images of lost innocence, rivalry, promise, and forgiveness.
What Genesis contains
Creation and the Garden of Eden
God creates the world, and Adam and Eve live in Eden. After eating the forbidden fruit, they must leave the garden.
In Paradise Lost, Adam chooses to eat the fruit after Eve has eaten it, knowing that her action has broken God’s command. Their departure from Eden closes the poem.
In Paradise Lost by John Milton
Noah and the flood
God sends a flood against a world filled with violence. Noah’s ark preserves his household and animals, and the rainbow becomes a sign of God’s covenant.
In Genesis, Noah sends out birds to discover whether the floodwaters have fallen. A dove returns with an olive leaf, showing that plant life is returning.

Abraham and the promise
God calls Abraham to leave his homeland and promises him descendants and land. His family’s story joins trust in God with uncertainty, conflict, and difficult tests.
In Genesis, Abraham takes Isaac to a mountain after God commands him to offer his son. A divine messenger stops him, and a ram takes Isaac’s place.

Joseph and his brothers
Jacob’s sons sell their brother Joseph, who eventually rises to power in Egypt. A famine brings the family together again and gives Joseph the chance to forgive them.
In Genesis, Joseph hides his identity while his brothers ask him for grain. After testing them, he reveals who he is and arranges for the family to settle in Egypt.

How to recognise Genesis in stories
- Look for a garden, forbidden fruit, or exile from an innocent home.
- Notice an ark, a dove with an olive leaf, or a rainbow after disaster.
- Watch for rival brothers, promised descendants, and journeys toward a new homeland.

Does Genesis tell the story of Moses?
No, Moses’s life begins in Exodus, not Genesis. Genesis ends with Joseph’s death in Egypt, after explaining how his family came to live there. That ending prepares the setting for the Israelites’ later enslavement and escape.
Is the forbidden fruit an apple?
The fruit is not identified as an apple in Genesis. The story names the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but leaves its fruit unspecified. Apples became familiar in later European art and retellings.
