Who Otto Fuchs is
Otto Fuchs works for Jim Burden's grandfather on the Nebraska prairie. He comes from Austria and has worked as a cowboy before Jim meets him. His scar and quick smile are the details that mark his first appearance.
Otto Fuchs and the others in the story
Otto meets Jim at the station when the boy arrives to live with his grandparents. They travel by wagon across the dark prairie toward the Burdens' farm. For Jim, the open country feels strange, with almost nothing visible but earth and sky.
Otto becomes a loyal friend to Jim, offering kindness within this unfamiliar world. At Christmas, he and Jake cut a small tree and bring it to the Burden house. The family decorates it with homemade ornaments and gathers around its glow.
