An epistolary novel is a novel told through letters, sometimes combined with diaries, newspaper reports, or other documents. Readers follow events through records the characters write or gather, rather than through one continuous account.
Ways an epistolary novel tells its story
Letters from one main writer
One character's letters carry most of the story. Readers learn about other people through that character's reports and judgments.
In Pamela, Pamela writes to her parents about her employer's unwanted advances and her efforts to protect herself.
In Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded by Samuel Richardson
Letters from several writers
Several characters exchange letters, allowing readers to compare what each knows, believes, or hides.
In Lady Susan, Susan describes her schemes to Mrs Johnson, while letters between other characters reveal their suspicions about her conduct.
In Lady Susan by Jane Austen
Letters mixed with other records
Letters appear alongside diaries, reports, and other documents. Each record supplies another piece of the story.
In Dracula, Jonathan Harker's journal records his stay in the Count's castle, while the ship's log recounts the voyage to England.
In Dracula by Bram Stoker
How to spot an epistolary novel
- Look for dates, greetings, signatures, or diary headings.
- Check whether documents carry the main events rather than interrupt them.
- Compare what each writer knows and chooses to tell.

Does a novel count as epistolary if it contains only a few letters?
Usually not: letters need to carry a substantial part of the story for a novel to count as epistolary. Many novels include an important letter, but their main events still unfold through ordinary narration rather than a sequence of documents.
Why do epistolary novels use several letter writers?
Several letter writers let readers compare different accounts of the same people and events. One character may reveal a plan that another does not know about, or describe an encounter differently, creating suspense and raising questions about whom to trust.
