A denouement is the closing part of a story, where the main conflict is settled and the reader sees what follows. It usually comes after the climax and may tie up loose ends or leave some questions open.
Ways a denouement can end a story
Settling the characters’ futures
The ending shows where the characters stand after their struggles. Relationships, homes, or plans for the future fall into place.
At the end of Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Darcy are married, and the closing pages describe their relationships with family and friends.
In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Showing the aftermath
The ending shows what remains after a disaster or loss. It may restore order without making the outcome happy.
At the end of Hamlet, Fortinbras arrives after the deaths in the royal court and orders military honours for Hamlet.
In Hamlet by William Shakespeare
Leaving questions open
The main action ends, but some important questions remain unanswered. The reader must consider what the ending might mean.
At the close of A Doll's House, Nora leaves Torvald and their home, but the play does not show what her new life will be.
In A Doll's House: A Play by Henrik Ibsen

What is the difference between a climax and a denouement?
The climax is the decisive high point of the main conflict, while the denouement shows the outcome. A confrontation, discovery, or choice may form the climax; the denouement then shows what that event means for the characters’ lives.
Is a denouement the same as falling action?
They overlap, but falling action usually means the events leading from the climax toward the ending, while the denouement is the final settling of the story. In a short ending, the same scene may serve both purposes, so the boundary is not always sharp.
