本の内容
What would a Frenchman make of a host who keeps his hat on, calls him thee, and thinks baptism is an old Jewish custom? He walks into a quiet Quaker house near London and sees that the English live by rules he has never met.
Voltaire wrote these twenty-four letters as if to a friend at home, after a stay in England in the late 1720s. They caused trouble in France, where officials disliked seeing a rival country praised. A nation grows richer and wiser when its people may think, worship, trade and write as they choose.

Quakers show faith can do without ritual
Voltaire begins with a visit to a retired Quaker merchant. The man lives in a small, neat house, wears a plain coat, keeps his hat on, and says thee to a stranger. Voltaire bows in the French way and feels clumsy beside such calm courtesy.
The Quaker explains his beliefs one by one. He was never baptized, because he thinks washing with water belongs to the old Jewish law, and he says Christ asked for a baptism of the spirit. He keeps no paid priests, since he believes a faith that is sold turns a gathering into a shop.
He says thee to king and beggar alike, so that no one is flattered with empty titles. He will not swear an oath, even in court, and he answers a judge with a simple yes or no. The judges take his word.
Quakers also refuse all war, and not out of fear. They say they are neither wolves nor mastiffs, and that their God told them to love their enemies.
Voltaire teases the silent meeting he attends, yet his teasing makes his respect for this honest, unbought faith more believable.
A faith can be sincere and orderly without priests, oaths or ceremony.

『イングランド書簡』についての質問
What is Letters on England about?
It is a set of twenty-four letters in which Voltaire describes English life to a friend in France. He covers Quakers, the Church, Parliament, trade, inoculation, Locke, Newton, poets, playwrights and the honors given to writers.
Why did Voltaire write about the Quakers first?
Voltaire was curious about a people who refuse oaths, war and paid priests. Four letters on them show a plain, sincere faith, and set the book's theme that tolerance lets odd groups live in peace.
What does Voltaire say about Newton and Descartes?
He sets them side by side, praising Descartes as the man who opened the path and Newton as the one who walked it. Newton's gravity, light and calculus are treated in four letters.
When was Letters on England written and is it a true account?
Voltaire wrote it after his stay in England in the late 1720s, and it appeared in the 1730s. The people and events are real, though the tone is witty and the praise of England often pointed at France.
What is the main message of the book?
The main message is that a nation prospers when it allows many faiths, limits its rulers, rewards trade and honors thinkers. Voltaire shows these ideas at work in England instead of arguing them in theory.
