Readers who love stirring narrative verse, Roman history and legend, and tales of courage carried by a drumbeat rhythm will delight in this book.

本の内容

Picture a wooden bridge over the Tiber. On the far bank stands an army of ninety thousand. On your side, Romans swing axes at the beams, and three men block the road to buy them time. Would you stay, or would you run?

That scene sits at the heart of Lays of Ancient Rome, by the English historian Thomas Babington Macaulay. He wrote four narrative poems, each with a short essay that sets the scene. His bold idea was that Roman history began as song. You get galloping rhythm, clear stories and a lively argument about how legends become history.

Early Roman history began as lost songs

Macaulay opens with a claim about evidence. The public records of early Rome were almost all destroyed when the Gauls sacked the city. The first chronicles came more than a century and a half later. Even the Roman writers admit that their accounts were filled with battles never fought.

Yet those early years are full of vivid stories: the she-wolf and the twins, the carrying off of the Sabine women, the heroes who defended the bridge, the tale of Virginia. These legends are native, imaginative and moving, unlike most Latin writing, which copies Greek models.

His explanation is that societies without many books keep their past in rhyme, because verse is easy to remember. Welsh harpers kept a faint memory of Arthur alive. Serbs recorded their struggle with the Turks in lays. Rome, he argues, must have had the same. So the poems claim to give back the spirit of the songs, not to be accurate history.

Legends are often the afterlife of songs.

『古代ローマの詩歌』についての質問

What is Lays of Ancient Rome about?

It is a set of four narrative poems retelling Roman legends: the defense of the bridge by Horatius, the battle of Lake Regillus, the fate of Virginia, and a prophecy about Rome's future greatness. Each has a short introduction.

Is Lays of Ancient Rome a true story?

The poems retell legends from early Roman history, which Macaulay says were themselves based on lost ballads. They are imagined songs by Roman minstrels, so they are best read as legend turned into poetry, not as exact history.

What is the main idea of the preface?

Macaulay argues that the early history told by Livy and others came from older songs, as happened with tales of King Edgar in England and the Cid in Spain. His poems try to turn that history back into verse.

Who is Horatius in the poem?

Horatius is the captain of the gate who volunteers to hold the bridge over the Tiber against Lars Porsena's army, with two companions, Spurius Lartius and Herminius, while the Romans behind them cut the bridge down.

Is Lays of Ancient Rome easy to read aloud?

Yes, the poems have a strong beat, clear stories and repeated phrases that make them natural to read aloud. Short introductions explain who is speaking and what is going on before each poem begins.
