Readers who enjoy big questions about knowledge, certainty, freedom and God will love this book. It also suits readers who want the central argument of Kant's Critique in compact form.
本の内容
Can a whole branch of learning be wrong from the start? Immanuel Kant thought one could be. Every science moves forward, he says, yet metaphysics, the study of God, the soul and the world as a whole, keeps circling the same spot.
Kant wrote the Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics in 1783 as a shorter guide to his large Critique of Pure Reason. He begins from knowledge nobody doubts, mathematics and the science of nature, and asks how it is possible. Only then does he turn to God, freedom and the soul.

Test whether metaphysics is possible before building it
Kant opens with a blunt complaint. Every other science advances, yet metaphysics, which claims to be wisdom itself, has taken no step forward. Its schools contradict one another, and no standard separates sound knowledge from shallow talk. So before anyone writes another system, Kant wants one question settled: is anything like metaphysics possible at all?
His own answer begins with a sharp claim. Metaphysics deals in knowledge that does not come from experience. Its principles must come from reason alone, which sets it beside pure mathematics, yet it must also tell us something new. That combination is exactly what needs justifying.
Kant also rejects an easy way out. Some thinkers answer every doubt by appealing to common sense. He replies that common sense works well in daily life, but it has no standing in a debate about pure reason.
Before you defend a grand claim, ask what could make it knowable. Kant does not mock the hope behind metaphysics. He only insists that longing is not proof.
Before you claim to know something beyond experience, show how such knowledge could be possible.

『Kant's Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics』についての質問
What is Kant's Prolegomena about?
It asks whether metaphysics can be a science. Kant starts from mathematics and natural science, explains how they hold certain knowledge, and shows why reason fails when it claims knowledge of God, the soul or the world as a whole.
Why is it called Prolegomena?
The word means introductory remarks made beforehand. Kant meant the book as a preparation and a guide to his larger Critique of Pure Reason, and as a preliminary for anyone who hopes to build a future metaphysics.
What does synthetic a priori mean?
It describes a judgment that adds something new to a concept and is still known as necessary before experience. Kant argues that mathematics and the basic laws of nature are of this kind.
How did Hume influence Kant?
Hume doubted that we can know a necessary link between cause and effect. Kant says this roused him from his dogmatic slumber, and the book is largely his reply, widened to the whole of pure reason.
Is the Prolegomena a good way into Kant?
Yes, many readers use it as a first step. Kant moves from known facts to their grounds, answers objections, and gives examples such as the hand in the mirror and the sun warming a stone.
