This book suits readers who love social history, travel writing and women's stories, and anyone curious about everyday life in nineteenth-century Japan, told by a warm, opinionated guide.
本の内容
What does it take to see inside a Japanese home? In the 1880s, an American teacher named Alice Mabel Bacon found the answer in friendship. She lived in Tokyo, taught at the school for noble daughters, and spent years talking with Japanese women who treated her almost as family.
Out of those talks came Japanese Girls and Women, first published in 1891 and revised in 1902. Bacon saw that books on Japan passed over half the population, so she follows a woman from cradle to old age, then moves to court ladies, samurai wives, peasants and city dwellers. You get a close, warm record of a society in great change, from doll festivals to sharp arguments about divorce and schooling.

重要なポイント 1/10
Friendship opens the closed door
Bacon begins with a problem of access. Earlier writers covered history, art and politics, yet left out half the people. Women and the homes they ran got only passing mention.
She explains why. Japanese people keep personal matters private from foreign guests, and even long-time foreigners rarely see inside a family. A foreign man, she adds, cannot hope to know Japanese women's daily lives.
Bacon gets in through friendship. Her girlhood friend Stematz, the Marchioness Oyama, receives the dedication, and Umé Tsuda reviews the work and adds to it. Many talks with these women supply the substance of the chapters. She offers the thing as she sees it, not the thing as it is. Her portrait rests on friendship, and she says plainly it is one observer's view.
