You will enjoy this if you like sweeping national histories and want one clear path from the age of the gods to the Meiji constitution.

本の内容

What happens when a government decides to tell its own country's story? In 1893 Japan did exactly that. Japanese scholars compiled a history of their empire for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and it treats the imperial line as the thread through every age.

This volume revises that account, and the editor K. Asakawa, who taught Japanese civilization at Yale, adds a fourth part that reaches the war with Russia. You meet regents, shoguns, monks and admirals. It begins with a goddess who hides in a cave and plunges the heavens into darkness.

重要なポイント 1/10

Myth gives the empire its first claim

The book opens with the Age of the Deities. The gods Izanagi and Izanami create the islands of Japan and give birth to the goddess Amaterasu and the gods Tsukiyomi and Susanoo.

Susanoo behaves so wildly that his sister Amaterasu shuts herself in a cave. Darkness covers the world until the other deities coax her out. Then she sends her grandson Ninigi to rule Japan for as long as heaven and earth endure. She gives him a jewel, a mirror and a sword, and these relics pass from emperor to emperor.

The editor warns that the oldest chronicles were compiled from oral tradition long after the events, and that dates before the fifth century allow wide latitude. Read the myths as a statement of what the nation believed about its rulers.

Takeaway: the myths explain why Japan's rulers claimed divine descent, not what happened in remote times.
