A new bride enters a house she dislikes
The play opens on a September morning in the villa of George Tesman. His aunt, Miss Juliana Tesman, arrives early with a bouquet and whispers with the old servant Berta, because the newlyweds still sleep after a wedding trip of nearly six months.
Tesman comes in, round faced and cheerful. A foreign university has just made him a doctor, and he expects to become a professor. His aunt adores him. She has even taken a mortgage on her own small annuity so that he can furnish the house. Tesman accepts this with little more than thanks.
Then Hedda enters, pale, with steel gray eyes and a cold calm. She greets the aunt politely, and within minutes she wounds her. She points to a bonnet on a chair and says the servant has left her old hat lying about. It is the aunt's brand new bonnet, bought to please Hedda.
When the aunt leaves, Hedda clenches her fists like a person in a cage. Tesman sees only what he wishes to see, and Hedda watches with a scorn she cannot speak openly.
Hedda's first cruelty shows a woman already trapped in her own marriage.

『Hedda Gabler』についての質問
What is Hedda Gabler about?
It follows Hedda, a general's daughter who returns from her honeymoon with a scholar husband and feels trapped. When an old friend and rival reappears, she tries to steer lives and tests the limits of her own courage.
Who is Hedda Gabler?
She is the proud, intelligent daughter of General Gabler, now married to George Tesman. Gabler is her maiden name, which Lovborg repeats in their private conversation, and she insists he learn not to use it again.

They belonged to her father, the general, so they stand for his world of pride, courage and danger. Hedda handles them as a toy at first, and they grow into the play's central symbol of power.
When was Hedda Gabler written and is it a true story?
Ibsen published it in 1890. It is a work of fiction set in Christiania, now Oslo, though it draws on the manners, money worries and social pressures of its time.
Is Hedda Gabler easy to follow?
Yes, in its clear shape. It has four acts in one drawing room, a small cast, brisk dialogue and stage directions that tell you who enters and how they feel, so each scene is easy to picture.
