This is for readers who love a funny, warm family adventure with magic in it, and for listeners of any age who like brothers and sisters, wishes gone wrong and clever escapes.

本の内容

What would you do if a creature in the sand offered you one wish every day? Four children in Kent get exactly that, and they spend it badly. Their first wish makes them so beautiful that their own baby brother screams at them and the servants lock them out of the house.

Five Children and It was written by E. Nesbit, who tells the tale in a chatty, teasing voice, as if she sat beside you. You meet Cyril, Anthea, Robert and Jane, their baby brother the Lamb, and the cross, whiskery Psammead. You see what each wish brings, from piles of gold nobody will take to a castle under siege.

A hole to Australia uncovers a grumpy Psammead

The White House stands three miles from the station, between a chalk quarry and a gravel pit. Cyril, Anthea, Robert and Jane have lived two years in London. Now they have a garden, an orchard, a wood and almost no rules.

When Father leaves on business and Mother goes to nurse Granny, the children take their spades to the gravel pit. They dig a hole meant to come out in Australia, while the baby, called the Lamb, sleeps in the sand. Then Anthea feels fur and hears a dry voice telling her to leave it alone.

The creature that rolls out is brown and plump, with eyes on stalks like a snail's, ears like a bat's and hands like a monkey's. It calls itself a Psammead, the Greek word for a sand-fairy, and it is proud and prickly. It agrees to grant one wish a day for all four children together.

Anthea wishes for them all to be as beautiful as the day. Martha, the nursemaid, slams the door on four radiant strangers. They wait hungry under a hedge until sunset sets them right again.

A wish can be granted and still go badly wrong.

『砂の妖精』についての質問

What is Five Children and It about?

Four children and their baby brother find a sand-fairy called the Psammead in a Kent gravel pit. It grants one wish a day that vanishes at sunset, and every wish brings an adventure and some trouble.

What is a Psammead?

A Psammead is the sand-fairy of the story, a furry creature with snail-like eyes on stalks, bat ears and monkey hands. Its name comes from the Greek word for sand, and it is proud and short-tempered.

Who wrote Five Children and It and when?

E. Nesbit, an English author of children's stories, wrote it, and parts of it first appeared in the Strand Magazine under the title The Psammead. It is a made-up fantasy, not a true story.

Is Five Children and It easy to read?

Its chapters follow a series of wishes and adventures, with a friendly narrator who talks straight to the reader and plenty of humor and dialogue. That makes it easy to follow and fun to read aloud.

What is the main message of Five Children and It?

The book shows that wishes work best when thought through, and that real treasures are the people you love. It also shows the courage, honesty and loyalty that children show in a tight spot.
