The course opens by attacking a common boast, that a person believes only what the senses report. Atkinson says the senses are imperfect tools. Colour blindness and optical illusions show how easily they mislead. Even the motion of the earth, which every sense denies, is known only through reason.
He asks what a sense really is. The eye is a camera, the ear a receiver, and the nerves are wires that carry messages to the brain. Behind it all sits the real knower, the mind. Touch is the original sense, and the others are its specialised forms. Each sense added to a creature widens its world.
So further senses would be no stranger than those we have. Occultists call them the astral senses. He insists they are superphysical, not supernatural, just as the telegraph once seemed beyond nature. A mind that knows how narrow the senses are can allow for more.
