Who Julius Caesar is
Julius Caesar arrives in Egypt after following his defeated rival, Pompey. Shaw presents him as a living, tired and humorous man rather than a distant heroic figure. His first meeting with Cleopatra reveals his patience, as she confides her fear of Caesar without recognizing him.
What Julius Caesar wants
Caesar wants the money Egypt owes Rome and enough peace to return home. He insists that Cleopatra and Ptolemy share the throne, following their father's will. With few soldiers at hand, his calm depends on courage and a measure of bluff.
He treats mercy as both decent conduct and a practical way to govern. For him, revenge creates further revenge, while forgiveness offers another way to exercise strength.
Julius Caesar and the others in the story
Caesar becomes a teacher and friend to Cleopatra, whose fear often turns into cruelty. He shows her that ruling requires calm judgment, not simply the power to punish. Their bond combines friendship, instruction and flirtation, rather than becoming a grand love story.
His blunt officer Rufio remains loyal while speaking his mind about Caesar's choices. Britannus, his solemn secretary, provides another contrast through his devotion to rules and British customs.
