Who Quintus Arrius is

Quintus Arrius takes command of the Roman galley where Judah Ben-Hur is forced to row. He notices that the young slave carries himself differently from the other prisoners and begins asking him questions. Arrius finds Judah educated, proud and unbroken, and orders that he remain unchained when battle begins.

Quintus Arrius and the others in the story

When the ship is rammed during a battle against pirates, Judah finds Arrius in the water. Instead of abandoning the Roman commander, Judah brings him to safety on a floating plank. Grateful and impressed, Arrius adopts Judah as his son, giving him a Roman name, wealth and a place in society.

How Quintus Arrius changes

Through his connection with Arrius, Judah enters a Roman world of athletic training, chariot driving and military skills. Arrius shows that Roman authority can have a fairer face than the cruelty Judah has already suffered. His kindness offers a contrast to Messala's betrayal, though Judah remains devoted to his Jewish faith and missing family.
