This is for anyone who loves fairy tales with a warm heart and enchanted houses, and for readers curious how a tale of kindness and loyalty took shape in eighteenth century France.
本の内容
What would you give to save someone you love? In this tale, a tired merchant picks a branch of roses in a strange garden, and the price is his life, unless one of his daughters takes his place. The youngest, called Beauty, steps forward without a moment of hesitation.
Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, a French writer who died in 1780, shaped the story into the form most readers know. She wrote with young readers in mind, so the tale moves briskly and teaches as it goes. You will hear about pride, envy, kindness and the gap between looks and character.

A rich family loses everything and Beauty stays kind
The tale opens with a very wealthy merchant who has three sons and three daughters. His daughters are all lovely, but the youngest is the loveliest, and as a child she is called Little Beauty. The name sticks, and it makes her sisters jealous.
The two elder sisters are proud of their money. They spend their days at balls and plays, and they laugh at Beauty because she prefers good books. Beauty thanks her suitors politely and says she wants to stay with her father a few more years.
Then the merchant loses his whole fortune and is left with a modest country house far from town. He tells his children with tears in his eyes that they must go there and work. The elder sisters refuse, sure that their suitors will marry them anyway. The suitors vanish. Nobody pities the proud sisters, but people feel sorry for Beauty, who was always generous to the poor. She says she cannot leave her father in his misfortune.
Beauty cries at first, then talks sense to herself. Tears will change nothing, so she decides to be happy without a fortune. In the country she rises at four, cleans the house and cooks. After her chores, she reads, plays the harpsichord and sings while she spins.
Her sisters sleep until ten and mourn their lost clothes and friends. They call Beauty spineless for being content, and they leave her all the housework. Her father sees the truth and admires her patience.
A person's worth shows most clearly when comfort is gone.

『美女と野獣』についての質問
What is Beauty and the Beast about?
It tells of a ruined merchant's youngest daughter, Beauty, who takes her father's place at the palace of a frightening Beast. Through honest talk and kindness, she comes to know him as he truly is.
Who wrote Beauty and the Beast and when?
Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont wrote this version of the tale in the eighteenth century. She died in 1780. She drew on older French fairy tale material and shaped it into a short story for young readers.
Why does Beauty ask her father for a rose?
She asks for a rose because she wants to ask for something small without seeming to criticize her sisters, who request many costly gifts. Picking the roses after his stay brings the Beast's threat and sets Beauty's journey in motion.
Is Beauty and the Beast a true story?
No, it is a fairy tale. It features enchanted palaces, invisible servants, magic mirrors and a mysterious lady in a dream. Its lessons about kindness, honesty and judging people by character, however, speak to real life.
What is the main message of Beauty and the Beast?
The main message is that goodness of heart matters more than looks, wealth or cleverness. The tale also shows that pride and envy damage those who hold them, while gratitude and honesty can grow into deep love.
