Readers drawn to intellectual portraits, the history of science, and debates about governing society will enjoy this book. It also suits those who like to see one great thinker judge another with respect and precision.
本の内容
Can a philosopher found a science of society and then end up designing a church with no God? That is the strange career John Stuart Mill follows in these two essays on Auguste Comte, the French thinker who gave the world the word Positivism. Mill writes as a friendly judge, generous where Comte is strong and blunt where he is not.
The first essay praises Comte's great treatise, the Cours de Philosophie Positive, and marks its flaws. The second turns to the later Comte, who called himself High Priest of Humanity and drew up rules for worship, work, marriage and even paragraphs. You get the main ideas of Positivism in clear order, then Mill's verdict on each.

Positivism has become too important to ignore
Positivism, once known to a handful of disciples, now shapes the philosophical debates of the age. Thinkers who never use the label are attacked as Positivists anyway, and defenders of older systems feel they must answer the school first.
Why write now and not sooner? While Comte had few readers, the useful course was to help his work become known. Now that the treatise gains influence, its errors can do harm, and open criticism can do none.
So Mill sets out his plan. He will review the Cours first and leave Comte's last ten years for later. He will separate what is Comte's own from what belongs to the whole age. A fair critic praises first so that the criticism can be trusted. A fair judgment begins by sorting a thinker's own ideas from the common stock of his time.

『オーギュスト・コントと実証主義』についての質問
What is Auguste Comte and Positivism about?
It is Mill's two-part review of Comte's thought. The first part praises and tests the Cours de Philosophie Positive, with its three stages and ladder of sciences. The second part examines Comte's later Religion of Humanity and his plans for society.
What are Comte's three stages?
Comte says every field of thought passes through a theological stage, where events are explained by wills, a metaphysical stage, where abstract forces are used, and a positive stage, where only constant laws are sought. Mill treats this as Comte's most original idea.
What is the Religion of Humanity?
It is Comte's later system of worship with no God. Its object is the Great Being, Humanity past, present and future, served through daily devotion, festivals and sacraments. Mill admires the central idea but criticizes its demand to live only for others.
Is Mill's book on Comte easy to follow?
Mill writes in clear, orderly sections and explains each Comtean term before judging it. He moves from the early treatise to the later religion, so the reader meets one idea at a time, each tested by plain examples.
