What if you fell unconscious in a collapsing mine in 1927 and woke up five centuries later? That is what happens to Anthony Rogers, an investigator for the American Radioactive Gas Corporation. A cave-in traps him, a strange gas holds him in suspended animation, and he climbs out into the year 2419.
Armageddon 2419 A.D. is a short novel by Philip Francis Nowlan, told as Rogers's own plain memoir. Its hero later became the comic strip star Buck Rogers. You get weightless belts, rocket guns, invisible metal and a ray that turns stone into nothing.

Anthony Rogers tells his story in a preface. In December 1927 he inspects an abandoned coal mine in Pennsylvania where engineers have reported radioactive traces.
The old timbers give way, his two assistants are buried, and gas fills the shaft. Rogers loses consciousness. When he wakes, the shaft is open again, and he climbs out into a vast forest with no sign of people.
After days of wandering, he sees a youth in green backing out of the trees and firing a silent pistol. Then the youth leaps fifty feet through the air, catches a foot on a root and falls, bleeding. Rogers drags the stranger behind a tree and takes the pistol. He shoots one pursuer off a branch and destroys another in mid-leap with an explosive bullet. The rest flee.
The youth is a girl named Wilma Deering. A belt cancels most of her weight, so she can hurl herself through the air. Her attackers are Bad Bloods, an outlaw gang. Rogers learns the belt by trial, shooting ten feet into the air, flailing, before he leaps like a skater.
A hero who knows nothing, a girl he rescues and one fight open the whole future at once.
