You will love this book if you enjoy richly detailed rooms, rare objects, perfumes, paintings and poetry, or if you are curious about the decadent movement in French art.
本の内容
What would you do if you could build a whole house to hide from your century? Jean Floressas Des Esseintes, a pale and nervous duke of thirty, does exactly that. He sells his ancestral castle, buys a house on a hill at Fontenay-aux-Roses near Paris, and fills it with colors, gems, perfumes, books and paintings chosen for his own nerves. Nobody is invited.
Against the Grain was written by Joris-Karl Huysmans and published in 1884 as À rebours. It became a banner for the decadent movement, and it treats taste as a rebellion against money, newspapers and crowds. You meet a jewelled tortoise, an organ made of liqueur casks and a nightmare among strange plants. You also see what such a life costs a man.

A worn-out family produces its last restless son
The book opens on a gallery of portraits at the Château de Lourps. The early Des Esseintes are stern soldiers with chests that fill their armor. The family has intermarried for two centuries, and only Jean is left, a slender man of thirty with steel-blue eyes.
His childhood is lonely. He studies with Jesuit teachers who admire his quick mind but cannot make him work. Once rich, he tries one circle after another. The old nobles seem like mummies, the school friends are dull gamblers, and the writers are petty and obsessed with sales. He wears out his nerves and much of his fortune.
At last he wants only a quiet refuge from what he calls human stupidity. He sells the castle, turns his money into bonds that pay fifty thousand francs a year, dismisses his servants and leaves no forwarding address. Des Esseintes does not find peace, he flees what he hates and builds a world to match.
The retreat grows from weariness and disgust, not from calm.

『Against the Grain』についての質問
What is Against the Grain about?
It follows Des Esseintes, a rich and sickly Frenchman who leaves Paris for a house of his own design. Each chapter explores one taste of his, from colors and jewels to Latin poetry, perfume and religion.
What does the title Against the Grain mean?
The French title is À rebours, meaning backward or against the current. It describes a hero who rejects the habits of his age, preferring artifice to nature and private refinement to public success.
When was Against the Grain written and is it a true story?
Huysmans published it in 1884. It is fiction, though many of Des Esseintes's tastes in art, books and music reflect the author's own, and some real artists and writers appear by name.
Who is Des Esseintes?
He is the last duke of an old, weakened family, intelligent and nervous, bored by pleasure and contemptuous of society. He tries to build a perfect refuge, and the novel follows his experiments with it.
Is Against the Grain easy to follow?
The chapters are self-contained scenes, each centered on one room, collection or memory, so you can enter at any point. The hero's vivid obsessions and wry humor keep the pages lively.
