This book is for readers who love short, vivid stories, for parents and teachers who want tales that spark talk about right and wrong, and for anyone who enjoys sharp wit.

本の内容

Why does a fox walk away from a bunch of grapes and call them sour? He cannot reach them, and he would rather insult the fruit than admit he failed. Almost everyone knows a person who behaves the same way.

Aesop's Fables gathers hundreds of short tales in which animals, gods, and ordinary tradesmen face one choice and pay for it. Aesop is the name tradition gives to an ancient Greek storyteller, said to have lived as a slave. Many tales end with a one-line moral, and others end with a joke you decode yourself. You will meet a goose, a hare, a lion, and a mouse, and some plain truths about greed, pride, and friendship.

Flattery is a trap set for vanity

The first lesson of the fables is that praise can be bait. In the tale of the fox and the crow, a crow sits on a branch holding a piece of cheese. The fox stands below and says that if her voice is as sweet as her looks, she must be queen of birds.

The crow is so pleased that she opens her beak to sing. The cheese drops, and the fox snatches it. He tells her that she has a voice but needs some sense. The trick takes a handful of words, and it works because she wants to believe him.

The same device returns again and again. A lion admires a fat bull's shoulders, then asks why he wears such ugly horns. The foolish bull has them cut off and becomes easy prey. The flatterer always wants something, and the target always wants to be admired.

Not every victim falls. A grasshopper in a tree hears a fox praising her song and begging her to come down. She replies that she has seen grasshoppers' wings scattered at the entrance to a fox's den. She trusts what she has seen. The fables do not say never enjoy praise. They say to ask what the speaker gains.

When praise comes with a request attached, listen to the request and ignore the praise.

『イソップ寓話集――新訳』についての質問

What is Aesop's Fables about?

It is a collection of short tales in which animals, gods, and ordinary people face a choice and live with the result. Most carry a clear lesson about honesty, greed, pride, friendship, or hard work.

Who was Aesop?

Aesop is the name tradition gives to an ancient Greek storyteller, said to have been a slave. The tales were told aloud for generations and gathered by later writers, so the collection reflects many voices.

What does the moral of the fox and the grapes mean?

The fox cannot reach the grapes, so he decides they are sour. The tale describes people who run down what they cannot have, instead of admitting they failed. It is the origin of the phrase sour grapes.

Is Aesop's Fables easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that matters: each tale is brief, the characters are simple, and the language is plain. You can read one in a minute, pick the book up anywhere, and stop whenever you like.

What are the main lessons in Aesop's Fables?

The tales stress honesty, contentment, steady work, careful friendship, and suspicion of flattery and greed. Strength is shown as dangerous when used without thought, and cleverness as the weapon of those who lack power.
