Readers drawn to short songs, English hills, market towns and the ache of leaving home will love this collection. It suits lovers of verse read aloud and a voice that treats youth, love and loss with honesty and wit.

本の内容

Picture a young man on a train, leaving his home county for London. He looks back at a fading hill called Clee, and his hand still aches from the grip of the friends who said goodbye that morning. That small scene sits inside A Shropshire Lad, sixty-three short poems by A. E. Housman, and it holds most of what the book cares about: friends, home, and the way a place slips out of reach.

Housman was a scholar of Latin, and he published the poems in 1896. They are set in the hills and market towns of Shropshire, and the speaker is a country lad with a plain, quick, dry voice. Beneath the bright scenes sits one stubborn thought, that youth is brief and the world does not mend.

A Shropshire of the mind, sung by a lad

The book opens with a public song and then narrows to private feeling. Poem one is dated 1887, the year Queen Victoria marked fifty years on the throne. Beacons blaze from hill to hill, beginning at Clee, and the speaker asks the soldiers to remember friends who lie buried far away. It sounds like a patriotic hymn, yet it already ties a county to its dead.

From the second poem on, the voice belongs to one young man, or to many young men who share one mood. He names real places such as Ludlow tower, Wenlock Edge, Bredon Hill and the rivers Teme, Corve and Severn. You do not need a map, because the names work like a refrain. Each one carries a small weight of home.

The Shropshire in these poems is partly imagined. Poem forty calls it the land of lost content, a place seen shining from far away. The speaker looks at it from London, from the grave, or from the far side of youth, and he can never walk back in.

Housman uses short lines, four-line stanzas and exact rhyme, so the poems stay in the ear after one hearing. A cheerful tune often carries a bitter fact. Place gives the poems their warmth, and loss gives them their point.

『A Shropshire Lad』についての質問

What is A Shropshire Lad about?

It is a book of sixty-three short poems in the voice of a country lad. They deal with spring, love, soldiers, early death, crime and homesickness, all tied to the hills, towns and rivers of Shropshire.

What does the land of lost content mean in A Shropshire Lad?

It is the speaker's name for the home of his youth, seen shining from far away in poem forty. It stands for a happy past in the countryside that he cannot walk back into.

When was A Shropshire Lad written, and is it a true story?

Housman published it in 1896. It is not a true story or a diary. The poems are spoken by an invented country lad, and the Shropshire they show is partly a place of memory and imagination.

Why is there so much about soldiers and early death in A Shropshire Lad?

Young men marching to war and dying young were close to the life of the time. The poems use them to show that youth is short, and they honour the lads while wishing them well.

Is A Shropshire Lad easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that the poems are short, the words are plain and the rhymes are clear. Each poem can be read alone in a minute, and most sound best aloud in small groups.
