You will love this if you enjoy odd, outspoken voices, early American characters, comic memoirs, and true tales of luck and bold trading told by the man who lived them.

本の内容

Picture a man who builds a tomb under a garden temple, fits it with a lock so he can take the key inside, and stocks it with fireworks, pipes, tobacco, a speaking trumpet, a Bible and some good songs. That man is Timothy Dexter of Newburyport, Massachusetts, and he tells you so himself in A Pickle for the Knowing Ones.

Dexter lived from 1747 to 1806. He made a fortune as a merchant, crowned himself Lord Dexter, and filled his grounds with carved figures of great men. Then he took up his pen. The pamphlet is a bundle of short pieces on kings, priests, lawyers, colleges, his family troubles and the secret of his money. You hear what he thinks of government and learning, and how he says he got rich. The spelling is his own, and so are the jokes.

重要なポイント 1/7

A Merchant Crowns Himself Lord of Newburyport

The pamphlet opens with a call to all mankind for a great day of rejoicing. Dexter then describes what he has built on his land in Newburyport. A Royal Arch is topped by three figures, with Father George Washington at its center, King Adams to the right and the current king to the left. Washington keeps his hat on and the others take theirs off.

The details come in a rush, as if he were giving a tour. The Arch is seventeen feet high. Thirteen pillars stand in a row for the thirteen states. His house has three stories, and a spread eagle sits on the cupola. He says the Arch and its figures cost thirty-nine pounds of silver.

Then comes the odd centrepiece. In his garden is a Temple of Reason, and under it a tomb that cost ninety-eight guineas. He keeps an uncommon lock so that he can lock himself in with fireworks, pipes and tobacco, a speaking trumpet, a Bible and songs for company.

He seems to know how it sounds. He says that to those who have not seen it, he must look like a liar. He also calls himself the first Lord in the United States, and says the voice of the people made him one.

Dexter builds a world of figures and titles around himself, and he invites you to enjoy the show.
