Shakespeare's Sonnet 18

Shakespearen sanat ja selkeä nykykielinen teksti rinnakkain, säe kerrallaan. Luettavissa maksutta.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?Thou art more lovely and more temperate:Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,And often is his gold complexion dimm’d,And every fair from fair sometime declines,By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimm’d:But thy eternal summer shall not fade,Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Should I compare you to a summer's day? You are lovelier and milder. Rough winds shake May's precious buds, and summer's allotted time is far too short. Sometimes the sun shines too hot, and often its golden face is dimmed. Everything beautiful eventually loses its beauty, stripped of it by chance or nature's changing course.
But your eternal summer will not fade or lose the beauty you possess. Nor will death boast that you wander in his shadow, because you will grow with time in these lasting lines.
As long as people can breathe or eyes can see, this poem will live, and it will keep you alive.
