Shakespeare's Sonnet 110

Shakespearen sanat ja selkeä nykykielinen teksti rinnakkain, säe kerrallaan. Luettavissa maksutta.

Alas! ’tis true, I have gone here and there,And made my self a motley to the view,Gor’d mine own thoughts, sold cheap what is most dear,Made old offences of affections new; Most true it is, that I have look’d on truthAskance and strangely; but, by all above,These blenches gave my heart another youth,And worse essays prov’d thee my best of love. Now all is done, save what shall have no end:Mine appetite I never more will grindOn newer proof, to try an older friend,A god in love, to whom I am confin’d.Then give me welcome, next my heaven the best,Even to thy pure and most most loving breast.

Sadly, it is true: I have wandered here and there and made myself look like a fool, wounded my own thoughts, sold cheaply what I value most, and turned new loves into the same old offenses. It is very true that I have treated truth like a stranger and looked away from it. But I swear by everything above us, these departures gave my heart a new youth, and those worse experiences proved that you are the best of all my loves. Now everything is over except what will never end. I will never again sharpen my appetite with new experiments to test an old friend, a god of love to whom I am bound. Then welcome me into your pure and deeply, deeply loving heart—you who are the best thing next to heaven.

Kysymyksiä tästä sonetista

Is the modern version the whole text?

Yes. Every line of the sonnet is here in plain modern English, in the same order, beside Shakespeare's own words.
